I want to open this email with a hearty THANK YOU! I’ve gotten so many nice, encouraging, and downright funny messages from some of you and OMG y’all are the best! Also, my gal pal Jamie emailed me with this question:
“I have a few new PR account exec hires who are experienced, but somewhat junior. Do you have any tips for how they can win favor with you and your friends?”
Yes! For sure. I won’t speak for the other gals in similar shoes, but I suspect they’d agree. I know the following items are major winners for me though:
Personalized emails/using names. Those “Hey girl!” and “Hey babe!” emails feel like spam (they may not be, but they feel that way). Using our names and throwing in a short line that feels personalized goes a super long way. Building a genuine relationship keeps you (and your products) at the top of our minds.
Find something we can connect over. Even in a socially-distant pandemic era, I’ve managed to grow closer to dozens of lovely publicists. Each has managed to connect over something different—some over our pets, some over our geography, some over a love of meme swapping. Some even over a love of mom’s spaghetti and early 2000s music culture. You get the point though. We all have things in common <3
Never adding Dropbox or heavy transfer files. I will never, ever, ever in the history of ever download an entire lookbook to my computer. It takes time, later has to be deleted, etc. Modernize! Use Google to spare my wee lil’ Macbook. Or just wait for the request for imagery.
Social shares. If you’re pitching a brand/product/expert, remember to include messaging that they’re great about social media shares. We like our work being supported, and we really like our work being appreciated. Social shares are free for you and make us look extra great with our higher-ups. They’re also relationship-builders. I can go on for days about this, and maybe I will another time… but if your soap brand isn’t good about social shares after I’ve put them in 5 articles… meh, bad taste o’clock.
Alright, let’s move onto the regular stuff!

OMG YOU GUYS! This Likha planter looks just like my little doggo. Wrote about it as a Valentine’s Day gift for RD, but I thought you should all know that it’s the best thing on my desk right now. They have all sorts of other breeds too, but the poodle version looks just like my tiny maltipoo.
Can I ask for your advice? Not for a story, just my own personal existence—hair toner at home? Yay/nay? Tell me everything and link me to products. My highlights need occasional sprucin’ up and my colorist books appointments like 4 months out OMGSKJDKSJDKJSKJFKDS. Also be honest if doing your own toner ruined your life.
That’s it for now! Have a long, in-depth newsletter tomorow so stay tuned for that and have the best, most peaceful day.
That planter is freakin adorable!
Hello. It's your friendly bleaches-her-own-hair-at-home neighbor, Hannah. I don't have a recommendation for an actual toning solution brand, BUT I use these drops (the blonde version but linking the brunette version here) every time I shower and they're great. You add 2-4 drops into whatever product you're putting into your hair when it's wet and it *immediately* tones oranges/reds/brassiness. Maybe I should reach out to be an affiliate for IGK? lol
