Hi, hi from the balmy south! Super missed the thick air and slower pace of life. I’m late to the work game today so I’m going to try to hustle on some writing and then throw my kiddos in the pool <3

Trending on Skimlinks data:
It’s been a minute since I published these and they’re TOTALLY interesting this week. I mean, I think so at least. I’m going to dig into these a lot more in tomorrow’s AT newsletter, but there are some interesting cultural shifts that are spilling over into financial ones. That leaves a lot of new growth opportunities for brands and PR teams and space to tighten your energy output on things that are sliding downward.
Some big movers and shakers right now are backpacks, an expected development, but the brands may surprise you.
STATE Kane Kids: 10%
MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check Tea Kettle: 10% (nice work, LVPR!)
Skid Resistant Bath Rug: 12% (you did it, MBooth!)
Kopari Coconut Melt: 35%!!!!!
Saatva Linen Sheet Set: 10% (Go Shari! Woohoo!)
Some deep thoughts:
It’s come to my attention via LOADS of you that a small handful of writers are charging for leads via Substack. It’s no secret that I think paid Substacks are a wonderful opportunity to deep-dive into specific skills and data, but charging publicists for story leads is wrong. And it’s not just wrong on a basic ew thats mean kind of level. It’s actually wrong on a journalism ethics level that can result in a pretty hairy mess for both the writer (who will eventually get chopped), but also the publicist and brand. When the editors of these freelance pieces figure out what’s up (and they will!), they’ll either remove the pieces entirely or have them re-written by staff or freelancers they trust. That means your placement is out the window, and worse yet, they’ll be wary of any and all brands included in the story. A guilt-by-association type thing, and they’ll wonder what other pay offs are happening. Long story short: don’t touch this garbage with a 10-foot pole. I’m promptly removing these writers from our Facebook community as well. Live by this motto: if a story lead ain’t free, it ain’t for me.
Before I left New York I saw a pumpkin growing in my garden against all the drought-ridden odds. I CANNOT EVEN TELL YOU HOW THRILLING MY BABY PUMPKIN IS! Wanna see my gourd pics?
Alright, alright, alright… time for an iced tea and poolside computing. Talk soon, friends.
