Some Amazon Secrets *shhh*
As promised, today’s Affiliate Tribe newsletter is devoted to an in-depth look at Amazon Prime Day and why it’s so important and newsworthy for just about every outlet with a digital side (read: every outlet). I’m going to pick this apart piece by piece, and you probably already know the first few points, but they lead to the bigger and bolder ones… so stick with me.
Most of America has a Prime account.
That means most of America is already comfortable shopping on Amazon, and the biggest barrier to entry for digital shopping is comfort and familiarity. Hurdle passed! That means an Amazon roundup or feature is more likely to drive sales than one to WidgetBrand.com, because the comfort level just isn’t there. And, as much as people resent Amazon for lots of things, they find it secure and mostly trustworthy. That’s enough to drive mega sales.
Commissions are on entire baskets.
Let’s say I write about the 10 best scarves for fall and include some Amazon links. A reader clicks on one, adds it to their cart, and then continues adding other items like toothpaste, socks, cat litter, and a package of snacks. The publisher gets the commission on ALL those items, because we were the driver of that sale. It’s pretty appealing, because depending on who you ask and the time of year—baskets easily top $100 on average.
